Frequently asked questions
Short answers to what people ask most.
Getting started
Which systems does Haul run on?
Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit. A macOS version is on the way.
Is Haul safe to install?
Yes. Every release is built automatically from the same source, and Haul checks the signature of each update before installing it. No ads, no toolbars, no bundled offers.
Why does Windows show a SmartScreen warning?
Haul's installer isn't code-signed yet, so SmartScreen doesn't recognise it. Choose More info, then Run anyway.
Should I use the installer or the portable ZIP?
The installer sets Haul up for your account and needs no admin rights. The ZIP runs from any folder; keep haul-host.exe and the extension folder next to Haul.exe.
Can I bring my downloads over from IDM?
Yes. Haul imports IDM's .ef2 export lists, with their referrers and cookies, as well as plain text lists and any file full of links.
Downloading
How many connections does Haul use?
Eight per file by default and up to 32, with limits per server. Haul starts with one and adds more while all of them are receiving.
What if my connection drops or the PC restarts?
Haul picks up where it stopped, as long as the server allows resuming, which most do. If the file changed on the server meanwhile, it starts over instead of mixing two versions.
Will Haul slow down my PC?
It's built to stay out of the way: the engine is native code and the window only redraws what changes. Set a speed limit if you want browsing and calls to keep the bandwidth.
Can I schedule downloads?
Yes. Queues start and stop at set times on the weekdays you choose, and can sleep, hibernate or shut down the PC when they finish.
Does Haul work behind a proxy?
Yes: your system proxy, HTTP and HTTPS, or SOCKS4/5 with remote DNS, plus a bypass list and PAC scripts.
Browser
Which browsers does Haul work with?
Chrome, Edge, Brave, Vivaldi, Opera, Arc, Helium and Firefox.
How do I add the extension?
Options → Browser Integration in Haul opens the extension folder. On your browser's extensions page, turn on Developer mode, choose Load unpacked and pick the chromium folder.
And in Firefox?
Open about:debugging → This Firefox → Load Temporary Add-on and pick firefox/manifest.json. Firefox removes it on restart; Developer Edition can install haul-firefox.xpi for good.
How do I let the browser keep a download?
Hold Alt while you click the link, or turn off catching for that site in the extension's popup.
Video
Can Haul save videos?
Yes. It saves HLS and DASH streams, and videos from many sites through the yt-dlp that comes with it, in the quality you pick.
Will it download protected videos?
No. Haul refuses encrypted and DRM-protected streams and videos.
What am I allowed to download?
Only what you have the right to. Haul doesn't change what a site permits; respecting copyright and each site's terms is up to you.
Privacy, updates and support
Does Haul collect any data?
Only anonymous usage statistics, and you can turn them off. There are no accounts and no tracking. Haul sends its version, the Windows release, build and edition, the processor type and how many downloads finished or failed, never addresses or file names. Statistics are on by default; Haul shows a one-time notice, and Options → General turns them off at any time, which deletes Haul's random install number. The privacy policy has the details.
How do updates work?
Haul checks shortly after it starts and every six hours, verifies the signed update and restarts. Running downloads carry on in the new version. You can turn this off in Options → General.
Where are my passwords kept?
Site and proxy passwords live in the Windows Credential Manager, not in Haul's own files.
