How to add the Haul extension to Safari
Safari's copy of Haul Browser Integration comes inside Haul for Mac, so there is no store to visit and nothing else to install. You only have to turn it on.
1. Install Haul for Mac
Download Haul, open the disk image and drag Haul into your Applications folder. You need a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 13 or newer and Safari 18.4 or newer.
Already have Haul 2.0 or newer? The extension is already in it. Go on to step 2.
2. Open Haul once
Open Haul from your Applications folder. That lets Safari find the extension. You can close the window afterwards: Haul keeps waiting in the menu bar.
3. Turn it on in Safari
In Safari, open the Safari menu at the top of the screen, choose Settings and click the Extensions tab. Then tick the box next to Haul Browser Integration.
- Not in the list? Quit Safari completely, open Haul again, then open Safari.
4. Allow it on every website
Safari only lets an extension work on websites you allow, and it doesn't always ask, so don't skip this step. If Safari asks about the websites you have open, click Always Allow. Then, still in Settings → Extensions:
- Click the name Haul Browser Integration in the list.
- On the right, click Always Allow on Every Website…
- Safari asks if you are sure. Click Always Allow on Every Website. With two screens, this question can open on the other one.
It worked when the panel says the extension can read and alter webpages on all websites. Safari shows that warning for any extension with this access. Haul's sends what it reads only to Haul on your own Mac (privacy), and you can change the setting any time under Settings → Websites.
5. Check that it says Connected
Click Haul's icon in Safari's toolbar. It should say Connected. From now on, clicking a link to a file type on Haul's list hands the download to Haul.
- Says Haul app not reachable? Click Retry, and Haul starts by itself.
6. Private Browsing
Safari keeps extensions out of private windows. To use Haul there, tick Allow in Private Browsing in the same panel under Settings → Extensions.
What works differently in Safari
Safari doesn't show extensions its downloads, so Haul catches clicks on links instead. A download that starts any other way, such as from a script or a link with no file type in its address, stays in Safari. To send one of those to Haul, right-click the link and choose Download with Haul.
Questions
Is the extension on the App Store?
No, and you don't need it to be. It comes inside Haul for Mac, and it updates when Haul does.
Do I also need the Chrome or Firefox extension?
Only if you use those browsers too. Each browser needs its own copy; Haul works with all of them at once.
How do I turn it off?
Untick Haul Browser Integration in Safari, under Settings → Extensions. Your downloads then stay in Safari.
Using another browser? See the extension in Chrome or in Firefox. Still stuck? Get help and tell us what the extension's popup says.
